Taste of the West are the largest independent regional food group in the UK. They work to promote and support fantastic local food and drink from the South West, an area covering Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. They champion food and drink producers throughout the West Country, so when we heard that Taunton Farmers’ Market won Gold for best Farmers Market in 2017, we were absolutely thrilled.
This is the fourth year in a row that Taunton Farmers’ Market have achieved Gold in this award scheme. Considering the South West is renowned for its rural excellence and diverse farming industry, achieving this award for the fourth time tells us we, as a market, and all our wonderful producers, must be doing something right.
The Farmers’ Market takes place each Thursday in Taunton High Street. There is a wide selection of local produce on offer each week – organic vegetables, and heritage fruits, along with free-range chickens, traditional pork and beef and seasonal venison, In addition, we have artisan breads, vegan and gluten-free food and cakes, local preserves, and authentic Japanese street food. We offer something for everyone, whatever their taste or lifestyle.
The market is more than a shopping venue, it’s an experience. As well as the wide variety of food we offer, the Farmers’ Market has a great atmosphere, with friendly stall holders who know everything about their products. Many of our producers offer samples, so you can taste before you buy. Our prices are comparable to the better-quality products in large retail chains, but with the added bonus of being local, a lot fresher and more environmentally friendly! Not only this, we are often accompanied by some great buskers, who lend the market a festival feel by offering live music to visitors. You don’t get that in a supermarket.
The market is also a great diversion for children over the summer holidays. Farmers’ Markets are a very different shopping experience to supermarkets, and youngsters are often enchanted by the market atmosphere and tasting Taunton Vale’s produce for themselves.
If you haven’t been before, come along this Thursday between 9 am and 3 pm in the High Street in Taunton, and find out why Taunton has become the Gold Standard of the West Country.
