I’ve seen a number of posts on social media complaining that Taunton doesn’t have a ‘real’ market. They complain that there aren’t enough stalls, that there’s a lack of quality and variety. Obviously, those posters don’t go into town on a Thursday.
Taunton Farmers Market is as real as it gets, with actual farmers who tend animals, cut hay and dig vegetables making a weekly trek to the big city (well, Taunton) to sell what they’ve grown, raised or made with their own calloused hands.
This particular Thursday, 1st September, Taunton Farmers Market will be receiving its Taste of the West Gold Award. This is the third time in a row our Market has won Gold in this regional food competition, and we’re immensely proud of ourselves. It also proves that Taunton has a real market, that it’s not only a decent market, but an excellent one.
The Taste of the West Awards programme has been promoting and supporting the South West food and drink industry for over two decades. Each year their judges visit local food producers and retailers throughout the region. They award individual producers, businesses and co-operatives for their standard of excellence and innovation.
To win this prize three times in a row tells you something about how much Taunton producers and residents value good food and drink. It reflects the good taste of Taunton consumers, without whom we would not have a market. Without regular customer support, no business can keep going, and without the demand for high quality ingredients and products, there would be no Gold standard.
If you’d like to join us in celebrating receipt of our 3rd Gold, come along to the High Street on Thursday. The Taunton Mayor and local press have been invited to attend the presentation, which will take place at 11 am during our weekly market. There, you can discover exactly why we won the award by seeing what we produce in and around Taunton, and having a taste of some of the goodies on offer.
From meat, dairy and vegetables to drink and artisan foods, there is everything you could wish for from a market. Not only that, you have the chance to win a monthly hamper containing something good from every stall. Join our newsletter to enter our prize draw each month, and keep abreast of what’s happening with your local Farmer’s Market.
